Element of American Isolationism; A Critical Discourse Analysis of Donal J. Trump’s Inaugural Speech

Abstract

Political discourse analysis is a field of discourse analysis which emphasis on discourse in political forums (such as speeches, uttering, debates and hearings) as the fact of concentration. The study intends to investigate how Donald John Trump gave the message of isolation in his election campaign and especially in his Inaugural address (2017). The sample of the study is the inaugural address of Donald J. Trump (2017). The study followed qualitative research paradigm. Political Discourse Analysis is used as the method for this research. The analysis of the speech revealed that repetition is used as the main instrument in Trump’s speech to support his narrative of ‘America First’. Donald Trump by using different techniques like repetitions and anaphora has conveyed the message of Isolationism in his inaugural address (2017).
